The Christmas holiday has many components, such as music, travelling, movies, and much more. Together, they make the Christmas season. Although there is most definitely a season, it is often disputed on when the season actually begins. With sources such as The Guardian claiming that the “Christmas Creep” is real and that it’s the gradual creeping up of the Christmas season, and others like The Daily Nebraskan claiming that the season should start on the first of December, it is important to get the thoughts and opinions of students in Chelsea High School.
“I think Christmas is a good holiday. I think it has a good meaning, but I definitely think that it’s over-exaggerated,” Tyson Linde (‘28) said. “It's drawn out a lot more outside the season than it should be.”
On the contrary, the common opinion of Christmas season lovers is that the season should be drawn out. And this brings up a large question: what makes the season less desirable in the minds of people who favor the season starting later?
“I think that it's overdone, almost like a one-hit wonder song. It's played over and over again, and it's good, but then it just gets to a point where it becomes unenjoyable. It’s the same movies, same songs, same thing every time.” Linde said.
The repetition of the same events, songs, and movies could rub some people the wrong way. However, on the opposite side, the repetition of elements of the season can be a tradition that brings back warm memories.
“The vibe is just different. You get presents, and there is snow,” Easton Fahlstrom (‘29) said. “My best memories are building snowmen with my brothers.”
The memories of a person often drive their nostalgia and feelings toward something. When asked about why someone would want to push the Christmas season back, a Christmas season lover had a strong response that was full of feelings.
“I don’t see how anybody would want to push the Christmas season to after Thanksgiving. There is no season like it, and it’s one of the best times of the year,” Fahlstrom said. “Family is around and friends too. The movies and the songs are nostalgic and so fun.”
However much the feelings, opinions, and memories matter to the argument of both sides in this large debate, what hasn’t been covered yet is their actual, straight-up opinion on when the season should begin.
“I wouldn't give the start of the Christmas season a set date. Just as close to Christmas as possible, and for sure after Thanksgiving. Also, after Christmas day, it should be done.” Linde said.
Though Linde’s opinion on when the Christmas season should begin is more based on feelings, alternatively, Fahlstrom provides an opinion that isn’t feeling-based, but weather-based.
“I would say Christmas season begins around early November when snow first falls and you can build a snowman,” Fahlstrom said. “I would say it ends around New Year's, when Christmas break is over.”
