For many athletes, success begins long before stepping onto the court. For freshman Drew Cabana, basketball has been a constant presence throughout his life, shaping both his passion for the game and his approach to competition. As he begins his high school career, Cabana is focused on developing his skills, earning trust within the program, and making an impact wherever he is needed.
“So my family has always been into sports, and my family has always been a basketball family, mainly my immediate family. So for my siblings, we would go to their games. I was learning from that, taking from how they play. And then I got into a passion for basketball,” Cabana said.
That early influence has continued to shape his perspective, helping him develop confidence and a clearer sense of direction as he works to establish himself within the program.
“A lot of people, especially my parents and some other coaches, have said that I need a better motor, which is more energy on the court, 100% all-time rebounding, defense, all that, and everything to be a well-rounded player,” Cabana said.
Understanding the importance of growth, he has taken steps to improve his overall presence on the court and become a player his teammates and coaches can rely on in any situation.
“Making districts, regional states, hopeful that we can make a deep run in playoffs, and all-state,” Cabana said.
As the season progresses, those ambitions reflect his focus on steady improvement and a commitment to helping his team compete at a high level when it matters most.
“He’s the best option at his position, so why not start him? The seniors and juniors aren’t taking it to heart, They know that he’s a good player and that, and they just want to win. And if starting him is best for the team, that’s what we’re gonna do,” senior Mitchell Rezler said.
That perspective highlights the team-first mentality within the program and shows the level of trust that has been built between players across different class levels.
“I’m not really sure I would say he’s a scorer at all three levels. But I think that he’s proficient at all three levels. Now, there’s not really a section of his game that he tends to favor. He is a very well-rounded player,” Rezler said
Rather than being defined by one specific strength, his ability to contribute in multiple ways has made him a valuable and reliable presence whenever he is on the floor.
“Everybody likes him. He’s a good teammate, he’s light-hearted when he needs to be, but he can be serious, and he’s just fun to be around,” Rezler said.
