Many students at Chelsea High School have been facing a serious problem: they don’t have a bus to ride. For many months, students have had to find alternative transportation, such as carpooling and parents to ride with. Ever since last year, students have been wondering what is going on with the bus shortages.
“Bus route cancellations are being rotated through due to a shortage of bus drivers,” Lisa Book, Chelsea’s transportation director, said. “We currently have more bus routes than we have bus drivers.”
Of course, this rotation can negatively impact students and their families.
“I feel like I have to rely on my parents a lot more on my parents to get me home, which is an inconvenience for the both of us.” Jacob Hackett (‘27) said.
Another aspect to consider with this driver shortage is the logistics of getting CHS’s many sports teams to their competitions.
“We are still experiencing a decrease in those interested in driving buses which has an impact on our routes and ability to transport for all athletics events,” Dr. Nick Angel said. But it isn’t all bad; he continues, “Mrs. Book — our transportation director — has been creative in finding ways to continue to offer transportation to our students.”
Not having enough bus drivers and labor jobs in general has been a big problem for Chelsea, finding bus drivers that are willing to drive and can provide the same amount of safety that Chelsea is known for is hard work, and the Chelsea School District is extraordinarily thankful for every bus driver.
