Quiz Bowl is perhaps one of the lesser-known clubs at CHS. It’s essentially competitive trivia, with a Varsity and a JV team practicing together twice a week and competing in matches against other schools. Despite their lack of notoriety among Chelsea students, both teams are doing exceptionally well this year.
The varsity Quiz Bowl team is currently undefeated. When asked how he thinks they got to that point, freshman Caleb Grimm highlighted a fellow teammate.
“It’s probably because Clara Fredenberg knows lots of literature,” Grimm said. Literature is a big subject they focus on in varsity, along with science and art, which she knows.”
Senior varsity player Clara Fredenberg, who joined the Quiz Bowl team last winter, shares her theories on their success, accrediting it to a range of interests and strengths on the team.
“I think we have a balanced team this year because in the Quiz Bowl, there’s a couple topics that could come up,” Fredenberg said. “This year, we have four people who have a pretty wide knowledge of a couple of topics, so together we can cover material.”
As with any team, collaboration is key, and Quiz Bowl is no different. Fredenberg emphasizes how encouragement and teamwork are integral to improving skills and winning matches.
“It’s really important to work together,” Fredenberg said. “At varsity practice, it gets a bit more competitive. Sometimes we’ll make each other do push-ups when we get questions wrong. Everyone’s very motivated, and we get a lot done.”
Of course, it’s not all work. As often happens between people with a shared passion, friendships, and connections are quickly formed. Having teammates who help and support each other is a big help too.
“They’re a bunch of nice people, and they’re easy to get along with,” Grimm said.
Working with friends is hard work at all. When doing something challenging, having friends nearby for encouragement makes practice a more fun, relaxed environment.
“It’s really fun,” Fredenberg said. “People are always teasing each other, and there’s lots of snacks, and everyone’s just having a good time.”
