With tryout athletes numbering around 40 girls, the freshman volleyball team has a promising chance of going far this year, sparking excitement among the lucky girls who are participating in it this season.
“Tryouts were pretty crazy,” freshman Audrey McCarley said. “It was very scary in the room, but when I found out that I made the team, I was really excited.”
This year, the freshman volleyball coach had to be selective in order to make a cohesive and successful team. With making the team, there comes a big responsibility. Hard work and dedication is expected from each player. The coach really focuses on bettering the girls’ versatility and skills.
“Our practices involve warm-ups, passing drills, and working on rotations,” McCarley said. “ Coach wants us to work on being open to playing different positions”
To properly allow the girls to show their skills, tryouts this year took four days. This way the girls could all get a fair chance to show off their skills. Many have been playing volleyball throughout middle school also. These girls are excited to finally play on a highschool team this year.
“I started playing volleyball in sixth grade,” McCarley said. “ I started playing mainly to be with my friends, but now I have grown to love it.”
Playing volleyball isn’t easy, but being on a team is fun because you feel more connected with your peers. Friendship and camaraderie are crucial to teams like this, so it is important to keep up a good attitude.
“I think our team as a whole could work on communication and positivity especially,” McCarley said. “I try to stay positive so we can work well together.”
