With a killer season and a hard-fought game, Chelsea volleyball ended their season in heartbreak last week against St. Catherine in the district finals game at Father Gabriel Richard High School.
Despite winning the first two matches, Chelsea volleyball struggled to close out the last three matches. Unfortunately, this led to the end of the season for seniors and many others, including Mia Kuboushek, a sophomore at Chelsea High School. Many players put forth their best effort but were challenged by their mental strength.
“Every time something would go wrong, we would dwell on it,” Kuboushek said. “We tried our best to not let things get in our heads, but unfortunately it didn’t work, and we struggled to get over little mistakes.”
Kuboushek acknowledged things aren’t always perfect but wasn’t pleased with her personal and her team’s performance last week.
“It was frustrating because it didn’t feel like anything worked in our favor,” Kuboushek said. “We would try to change and adjust things, and it just wasn’t working, which sucked.”
Despite having a game-winning kill and succeeding, she always puts her team first.
“It’s a team sport, and it was important we stayed together as a team rather than giving up on ourselves and each other,” Kuboshek said.
Although it was her first year on varsity, she built bonds on the court that are set to last forever.
“The hardest part was leaving bonds with people on the court that you’ve spent countless hours with,” Kuboushek said. “I’ve felt grateful for all the friendships I’ve made this year and the guidance from the seniors.”
Guidance and trust are keys to a successful sports game, but having a good coach can make it even better.
“Coach is really good at responding to different athletes and what needs to be fixed,” Kuboushek said. “If it weren’t for his positive mindset during the game, we definitely would have given up a lot quicker and sooner.”
Kuboushek hopes everybody realizes the hard work and dedication both the players and coaches put into the volleyball program.
“I’m so grateful for all the girls on our team this year,” Kuboushek said. “I wouldn’t want to do it with any other team.”
