The Chelsea Varsity Football team recently took down the Vikings from Jackson High on October 6th, 21–14. This win means that the Bulldogs won the SEC White Conference outright for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
“It means a lot to us, considering that we lost last year on our home turf for the conference championship,” Senior offensive lineman and Ohio Bobcat commit Seth Anstead said. “It’s a team that can’t go unnoticed.”
Chelsea is a part of the SEC white conference, which is made up of teams such as Adrian, Jackson, Tecumseh, Pinckney, and Ypsilanti. The other side of the conference is SEC red, consisting of Saline, Ann-Arbor Skyline, Ann-Arbor Pioneer, Lincoln, Monroe, Bedford, Dexter, and Huron.
The reason that the conference is divided into two parts is mainly due to school size. The red side consists of much bigger schools, while the white side consists of smaller ones. With the Bulldogs competing on the white side, the question becomes, what would playing on the other side be like?
“I would rather be on the white side,” sophomore free-safety Caden Steele said. “I think it’s more fitting for us due to school size.
Other players tend to agree.
“I think we’re in a better position on this side, but I know that we would definitely be challenged more on the other side, so a few non-conference games against some of the schools would benefit us and get us ready for the postseason,” Junior offensive lineman Oliver Kuboushek said.
However, there are some Bulldogs who think competing on the red side would bring them more challenges and provide better games. In the upcoming years, there may be a few additions to the white side of the conference, with a couple Jackson schools such as Parma Western and Jackson Northwest, which could improve the competition for the conference title.
