The Nutcracker is Ballet Chelsea’s most popular show during the winter but the spring shows change every year. The spring shows usually are focused on fairytales and fantasies including Cinderella, Sleeping beauty, and Giselle. But when spring rolls around, Ballet Chelsea decides to change things up a little bit and choose something more out of their comfort zone.
“ Don Quixote It’s more like a Spanish dance. There’s more like faster dances and spicier music. Not very much your typical ballet performance”, Freshman Maya Parker said.
People start to think when they hear the word ballet, the usual image that pops into their heads would be something like the nutcracker or swan lake, while Don Quixote is quicker, sassy and spunkier than those two shows. When dealing with two completely different styles of dance it can be a struggle from jumping from one dance style to the next.
“I would say it is harder in a way, because we do more than just ballet,” Parker said. “ We do these faster paced dances that can be more tricky than the one we are used to,”
Certain parts of shows are able to bring in lots of emotion like joy, excitement or even guilt and sadness. But performing a ballet show is very different from an acting performance because dances need to rely on the choreography and their facial expressions.
“This scene add a lot of character in way, mainly because of the different types of choreography we are using in the show and certain movements in the dance can really bring the scene and characters to life”, freshman Calli Chapman said
The bigger senses in the performance because people will tend to pay more attention to the scenes with the spunkier attitudes preferences or more depressive signs in the dance. But the dream scene is able to bring all different types of emotion to people.
“ When Don Quixote comes into the scene he is delusional, and he dreams of all these fairies and all these beautiful, wistful and magical things. But it’s really not true. It’s a dream and it’s really just a beautiful scene.” Parker said.
