On April 5th, Chelsea High School had their annual Collage Concert where the entire music program plays in one concert and at the end of the concert, everyone plays together as a huge group. However, some students had important events on the same day and had to worry a lot about missing the performance. For example, sophomore Ruby Jackson had a water polo tournament conflicting with the performance.
“Well, the whole time I was just thinking about when it’s gonna end, or if I’m gonna have time to get there, and how fast I need to get ready and go,” Jackson said.
And this wasn’t just an issue for athletes, it was also an issue for prospective Michigan State students. One of these people is senior Justin Alford, who, unlike Jackson, felt less stressed, and he had to leave early from the MSU Admitted Students Day event to go to the Collage Concert.
“It was fine, because the event wasn’t that stressful or anything,” Alford said.
The significance of this concert is important for the whole music program, which motivated people to prioritize attending it over other events.
“It is the biggest one of the year, and it’s really cool to watch, because we always have that big number where everyone gets to perform, like the choir, band, and orchestra,” Jackson said.
This specific concert shows a lot of different types of music groups that have been practicing the music that they’ve played/sung throughout the year.
“This are all the small ensembles and solos that were done at the MSBOA solo and ensemble. So this is all the students’ work. There are some large ensemble pieces like full band and orchestra, and choir things, but for the most part, it’s all things that the students worked on on their own time,” Alford said.
