Chelsea High School hosted a hallway decorating contest for its winter carnival. Each class designed their assigned hallway as a TV or game show. Judges selected the most creative and visually appealing designs. However, the freshman class faces significant challenges due to limited resources.
“Usually for the incoming freshman class, it’s whatever leftover budget from the senior class from the previous year,’ teacher Colleen Bertoni said.
The seniors haven’t always left money for the other classes, so the freshman students sometimes had to improvise by making things from scratch.
“With homecoming, all of the decorations were made by hand, just because there was no money to order anything,” Bertoni said.
The freshmen face significant time constraints due to the need to create some decorations from scratch.
“Having enough time and the resources has been a challenge,” Bertoni said.
Maintaining the decorations can be challenging with limited time and resources. Occasionally, they come loose, and individuals need to reattach them.
“A challenge too is that sometimes the decorations fall down so we’ve had students who have had to, like, re-tape things up,” Bertoni said.
When something falls down, they need to get to it quickly or some may step on it and with a limited budget, they will not have funds available to replace anything.
“For the hallway decorating we spent around like $100 because we didn’t want to use our whole budget for the year,” freshman Danny Hephner said.
The freshman class overcame numerous challenges while working with a budget of only $100. They produced an art and creativity display. This display will be a strong contender in this year’s competition.
“I want to look like, not too sloppy, like nothing falling down, but just like nice, and that the whole class kind of likes it,” Bertoni said.
