As the winter sports season has gone underway, our boys basketball team is back in action after their run to the final 4 last season. The season has started quite similar to how it started for the team last year. One thing that is very similar is having the team travel to play multiple schools in the Detroit area. Senior Sam Borcherding credits all of the travel in the past 2 seasons to the team’s success.
“The teams in Detroit are a really good look for us as we get deeper into our season,” Borcherding said. “They are teams we could be seeing later down the road in the playoffs, or they are somewhat comparable to teams we will see in the playoffs.”
As the team plays all of these Detroit area schools, most of the games seem to be played away. As far as travel can sometimes be an issue for teams, coach Andrea Cabana has done a great job keeping the guys on track to win these very important regular season games.
“Coach Cabana always keeps us on a similar schedule for away games, whether they are far or away.” Borcherding said. “We always get out of school and try to follow with a team meal of some kind. Then we leave for the game early enough to catch the JV game so we can get a good feeling for the gym and environment we will be playing in.”
This formula seems to be working for the team as they were on a 5-game win streak that included wins against state-ranked River Rouge and Detroit Edison. This success hasn’t fully trickled down to the JV level.
“When we go to these Detroit schools to play our games, we usually travel with the varsity team,” sophomore Gibby Ichesco said. “So instead of getting there early and having time to get ready, it’s more like a quick warmup and then it’s time to go. Although it’s no excuse, it’s definitely nicer to be playing at home. “
