In early December, senior basketball player Drew Blanton decided where he would be continuing his basketball career. Many schools recruited him, and many factors played into his decision, but Blanton ultimately chose to play for Cedarville University.
“What really stood out about Cedarville was the vibe and culture they have on campus,” Blanton said. “I also like the guys on the team. I felt I had a good relationship with them when I went to their practice, and I liked the coaching staff too.”
When making the decision, Blanton spoke about how much he enjoyed the energy of the campus and the team. Although those are all really good qualities, there was one thing that set Blanton over the edge and made his decision final.
“When I was on the phone with the coach, just talking about God for about 40 minutes, that’s when I knew it was the right spot for me,” Blanton said.
With Blanton having strong religious beliefs, his phone call with the Cedarville head coach further strengthened his confidence in the university when deciding where to play next year. Cedarville is also a religious university, which means Blanton will have plenty of opportunities to strengthen his beliefs.
“Just working hard with my brother all the time. He’s been a big influence on me and my game, and he always pushes me to improve.” Blanton said. “And also just playing with other good players. It really pushes you to keep getting better.”
When Blanton speaks of his own personal success, he gives plenty of the credit to his older brother Matt. Matt and Drew played together on the varsity basketball team 2 years ago. Since then, Matt has been playing college basketball and Drew will now be playing at the same level as his brother. Blanton also credits all of his AAU and high school teammates throughout the years for always pushing him to be a better player.
“Playing at the next level will be quite the adjustment I am sure,” Blanton said. “But with the support of my friends, family, and new teammates I think I’ll do just fine.”
