The boy’s and girl’s basketball games have been presented with very different student sections this year. There are varying opinions about how beneficial the student section has been this winter as the season reaches its mid-point.
“It definitely helps support us when we are playing,” Sam Borcherding said. “The student section gets pretty loud, and they get in the other team’s head when they cheer during games.”
Borcherding describes the type of support the boys have experienced from the student section during both home and away games.
“The student section helps us as a team because they keep the intensity up and a big student section helps maintain our energy as a team,” Borcherding said.
In opposition to the boys, 4-year varsity athlete Avery Lay shared that her experience with the student section during girls games is different than what the boys see.
“We can barely get a student section for our home games and typically if we do have some support from students or peers, they usually sit down, as opposed to the boys games they stand up and cheer and chant,” Lay said.
Lay explained that this year especially, there has been a lack of support for women’s sports when it comes to the student sections, but the girls have been successful at keeping their energy and intensity up despite this situation.
“In bigger games, it would be nice to feel the support from your friends and classmates,” Lay said.
