The class of 2028 hosted a holiday gift drive on December 13th through Faith in Action for Chelsea families in need of help this holiday season. The student council organized an event to wrap donated gifts and spread joy to families in need.
“We found a Faith in Action website and we asked them what families needed help, we also asked where to go to deliver the gifts,” freshman Madi Wheeler said.
Faith in Action is a national network dedicated to tearing down systems of injustice driven by hatred and racism.
“The freshman student council wrapping event was a good opportunity for people to get involved and to wrap gifts for families that can’t afford it,” Wheeler said. “It was a good opportunity for us to go above and beyond and help out our community.”
Events like this aren’t easy to plan, so the council had to work hard and efficiently to assist these families.
“It took a few weeks to plan out all of it,” Wheeler said. “We had to get in contact with Faith in Action and get supplies to wrap them.”
The council had lots of ups and downs in doing a project like this. For the freshman council, it was determined how they could be most effective and efficient.
“We wanted to start with the whole grade coming in and wrapping, but then it turned into just our ninth-grade council,” Wheeler said.
Through this process, the council was not only able to come together and bond but also bring the community together.
“We had one gift that wasn’t selected, but the fire department helped us out and volunteered to bring it in,” Wheeler said.
While the holiday gift drive united the council and the community, its true aim was to spread joy during the holiday season.
“It shows that there’s good deeds still going around and that people can still be positive,” said Wheeler.
