After much anticipation, this year’s Spotify’s Annual Wrapped statistics came out in early December. In 2024, there were lots of new up-coming artists and plenty of new albums dropping. However, users are not very pleased with the quality of this year’s Wrapped, creating backlash over the suspected inaccurate statistics.
“Spotify Wrapped shows your growth as a listener and the trends that you’re listening to over the year,” freshman Vivian Parker said.
Every year Spotify releases a statistical record of the music you listen to, showing how the user’s music changed over the year. In each Wrapped, there is always something different from last year.
“Last year’s Wrapped was different portions of a sandwich and it showed how much you listened to each genre,” freshman Amy Stanavich said. “I feel like this year’s wasn’t as good.”
This year’s edition was the Music Evolution, it shows the development of the listeners’ music over the months and gives them names of their types of music.
“For one month I had Bougie Clean Rap Hip Hop, that just sounds like it was A.I. generated,” Stanavich said.
Spotify users are starting to see a decline in the amount of work put into each year’s Wrapped. Calling it “overall less detailed” and “more sloppy”.
“It was just, here’s your Spotify Wrapped. There was no general theme,” Stanavich said.
Users are seeing in their data that a lot of their statistics are untrue with the number of minutes they listen to each year and some of their top artists.
“My minutes were definitely wrong,” Stanavich said. “I also feel like a few of my artists shouldn’t be as high as they were.”
Even with all of these issues, listeners every year still get very excited at the beginning of December, Spotify users are reflecting on how good last year’s Wrapped was.
“Even though maybe Wrapped wasn’t as good as last year, people are always going to be excited for it,” Stanavich said. “But I do feel like last year they put a lot of thought into it, more so than this year’s.”
