The water polo team had a successful season that came to an end. The players were sad to see Jessica Hinderer, their old coach, leave, but excited to see Jeremy Hodges, step in to lead the team. However, some players are worried that having new coaches could possibly change the way the team plays for the worse.
“He definitely switched up a lot of the plays from what we had before,” junior Zach Bieber said.
Coach Hodges changed up the way the team played hoping it would end up being a positive outcome for the team. He believed that the team would benefit from learning new play styles while they still knew the old ones.
“I think a downside with our new coach is he doesn’t really know a lot of the old plays that we used to run,” Bieber said.
To succeed, they needed to learn new plays and this may have negatively impacted the team. Learning new plays could have set them back from where they were because of the amount of time they spent practicing these new plays instead of getting better at what they already knew. In some ways, practicing these new plays expanded their knowledge of the sport.
“I think it’s good to learn new stuff,” junior Lucas Brekke said.
Because it is a new coach they had to spend time learning the new plays. Brekke thought that learning new plays would help them expand as a team so they could do more plays than what they had originally.
“Changing our playstyle will help us not only in the short term but in the long run as well,” Brekke said.
