Halloween costumes have come a long way over the past few decades, evolving from simple, homemade designs to elaborate, store-bought creations that can cost a ton of money. In the 80’s and 90’s, you would often spot homemade ghosts, Ninja Turtles, and superhero get-ups. But today costumes are seen as more expensive, creative, and detailed. In the 80s and 90s, Instead of heading to the store for costumes, people would often make their costumes at home, repurposing old clothes, using craft materials, and even borrowing items from neighbors. But in the end, none of that really mattered—the goal was always the same, filling that pillowcase with as much candy as possible.
“Most kids had homemade costumes,” 1996 Chelsea High School alumni Scott Hurst said. “One time I had to wear a frog costume from a neighbor that was homemade, but honestly costumes weren’t really the priority, candy was.”
But priorities have changed as of today. It’s like the candy has taken second place to Halloween costumes these past few years.
“I didn’t even go trick or treating, I was more focused on my costume for my Instagram post and the party after.” Tessa Gerstler (28) a CHS student said.
The importance of one’s Halloween costume doesn’t seem to be the only thing increasing, costumes have increased in price by a lot, and although costume prices are going up, the quality of costumes seems to be increasing along with the price.
“Today they are way more expensive, but way better,” Hurst said. “Back then, it was like a plastic face shield with a crappy rubber band and a couple of staples. But now, it’s kind of a fit, customized face mask that looks totally awesome.”
The style of costumes has made some major changes as well, while some like scary, spooky, and classic costumes. Lately, some people seem to be taking a different approach.
“I think that the scary Halloween costumes are cool, but I prefer more cutesy and kawaii costumes,” Gerstler said.
Costumes have gone from simple and homemade, to expensive and detailed. While either could be argued as better, the energy doesn’t seem to have changed about the excitement of Halloween.
“Although Halloween isn’t like my favorite holiday I still love it because every year is so much fun,” Gerstler said. “ I don’t dress up like I used to. I still have just as much fun every year and look forward to Halloween.
