In middle school, you don’t need as much time to work on assignments because they aren’t as important and hard as they are in high school. Some students complain that longer classes make class worse and they miss middle school class periods because they want class to be over, but others argue that they need more time in class and that the extra 12 minutes are beneficial. I believe that high school students are getting a benefit by having added class time, and in middle school, 60 minutes is not enough.
For the first few weeks in high school, at first, classes can seem longer than they usually seem because of the added time. Looking back at middle school, the homework that was assigned took much longer because students\ only had an hour in class to get things done. Compared to high school, homework takes much less time because of the extra time in class to get work completed.
During the school day in high school, bulldog block takes place every Tuesday and Thursday for roughly 35 minutes. Bulldog block is a time where students can do their homework, finish class work, meet with teachers, re-take tests, or go to the school store.. etc. on bulldog block days, class gets lowered to an hour and four minutes. (64 minutes). With a lot of work to get done, 64 minutes can be hard to work with and get stuff done with less time than usual. This relates to middle school when students had to do so much work in an hour even while trying to get quality work done.
At Chelsea High School, there are five class periods in a day, whereas at Beach Middle School there are six. Having more class time can lower the number of classes you have to take per day. In middle school, when you have only 60 minutes in every class and you have to have 2 electives while keeping your core classes all throughout the year, you need six classes per day. This relates to having less homework per night because you only have five classes of homework to keep up with instead of six.
When you go to school at Beach Middle School, the school day ends at 3:02. On the other hand, When you go to school at Chelsea High School, the day ends at 2:52 which is a ten-minute difference. The transition into having an earlier dismissal is very mild as it’s only ten minutes, but it is beneficial with students with work, or sports after school.
Overall, there are many changes from Beach Middle School to Chelsea High School. Some changes between the two schools students say benefit them (getting to work sooner, getting to sports sooner) whereas others say the opposite. Trying to get quality work done in sixty minutes can be a challenge for some students, and for others, it doesn’t make a difference. A benefit of high school class period time is Homework getting cut down because of the extra work time and bulldog block time. But, of course, there also is the angle of liking shorter classes better than longer ones.
