As the first trimester finishes up, Key Club has made its committees. But this year, Key Club has had a large increase in club members. So, each meeting has to buy over $100 worth of food to feed the club members.
”Last year we had around 30 to 40 students, this year we have 50-60, maybe more,” sophomore treasurer Lucy Martindale said.
The Key Club is a group of high school students who do a lot of volunteer work for the community and raise money for a chosen organization each year. This year the club has had an overwhelming number of students.
“Last year we raised money for a women’s clinic out in Detroit for single mothers with children that are in need,” Martindale said.
Even with the higher numbers this year, Key Club always tends to have members who do the bare minimum to get hours and get all the benefits.
”There are some people that just come to most meetings,” Martindale said. “ But don’t do a lot of the volunteering work.”
Because of the increase, Key Club officers have an increased amount of work to keep up with. Putting more stress on the newly-elected leaders.
”We have to keep track of a lot of things now,” Martindale said. “I have to keep track of everyone’s hours and money.”
Key Club Officers run the group. Officers have jobs like leading meetings every other week, managing social media, and maintaining files.
”The officers this year did a lot better at recruiting people and making sure we are all on top of things, which is a lot better than last year,” Martindale said.
The officers of Key Club are always wanting new members each year and are open to anyone interested. In general, mostly girls seem to join as last year only 3 members were boys.
“Just girls tend to come, we try to encourage everyone to come, including guys,” Martindale said. “We are very welcoming to everyone.”
