Every school year there are always trends. This year it seems to be the game Block Blast. At CHS, there are an overwhelming amount of students playing it throughout the school day and teachers have seen this too.
“Block Blast is this eight by eight square that you have to fill with these blocks,” Freshman Madeline Schultz said. “It sounds really stupid when you’re saying it out loud; but it’s a really addicting game.”
Other than placing blocks, Block Blast has nothing else to it. But, students throughout the school keep coming back to the game.
“Block Blast is internet free, so it’s a very good app to play in school,” Schultz said.
Students mention that they often revisit Block Blast multiple times during school hours.
“I open the app about four to five times in the school day,”Freshman Claire Vaquera said.
With this, teachers will see students on their iPads or phones interfering with their school work.
“What I worry about is if there is independent work time,” Spanish teacher Colleen Bertoni said.
Teachers are concerned that Block Blast is a part of the reason that students are not finishing their day’s classwork.
“For example, there was a day that I was gone and many students did not finish their assignments,” Bertoni said. “A part of me wonders, Were they socializing with classmates? Were they playing games on their IPads?”
But students believe that Block Blast is a “mind game”, that it is the best way to be distracted.
“I picked up my phone, but I didn’t want to scroll or anything,” Schultz said. “Block Blast isn’t loud and it’s just amazing.”
