The boys varsity soccer team has endured a few heartbreaking losses during their season, going five games without a win. Halfway through however, the team reversed their momentum, beating Grass Lake 4-1. They went on to beat Pinckney 3-1 the following Monday, and took a 3-0 victory against Adrian during senior night.
“Grass lake was our get-back game that we needed in order to beat the teams in our SEC,” varsity captain Gus Wehrly (‘25) said. “It got us back in this positive mindset and we started working as a team.”
During this game, Wehrly scored two of the four goals, and assisted player Maddox Blackman-Straub (26) in scoring as well.
“Gus’s performance during the Grass Lake game was class,” Straub said. “Watching him play, I feel like we have something special in him that not a lot of teams have. Gus has a leg on him. He can shoot so well.”
Christian Baños-Weatherholt (27), another player on the varsity team, explains how Wehrly affects the team’s spirit.
“Gus is such a positive guy,” Weatherholt said. “He always tries to bring people up when they’re down, and he’s just really fun to be around.”
Straub goes on to solidify Weatherholt’s comments on Wehrly’s character, explaining what it’s like to be on the team with Wehrly.
“He always has such a positive mentality,” Straub said. “If you’re feeling down and you’re around Gus, you can’t really be sad. The kid always cheers you up.”
Many of the players attribute a part of the team’s recent success to Wehrly’s positivity. Wehrly explains his mentality and his relationship with the team.
“When something doesn’t go my way, or how I planned it going, I keep my head up, and I look past it,” Wehrly said. “I try to lead by example by getting to practice early and staying after to help the younger players understand what it takes if you want to make improvement. Most importantly, I want everyone to have a good time and just have a great season.”
