Powderpuff football has always been a huge part of homecoming week, garnering large amounts of attention and having significant implications as to who will win the homecoming competition. As the games grow closer, the senior powderpuff team, who pulled off an improbable underclassman victory as sophomores two years ago, works hard to prepare for the games in order to return to the top.
“I think our girls have put in a lot of hard work over the years. Sophomore year we won it all. Last year, we were a little bit disappointed with the performance,” senior coach Carson Freeman said.
Although the team was very disappointed by last year’s loss, they have not lost sight of the ultimate goal, and often look back on their victory from sophomore year for hope.
“The team took it personally because they felt that they got cheated. And, [our motto], no excuses, they’re taking it to heart and they’re ready to go,” Freeman said. “We know that we have what it takes, and we can get it done again because we have superior athletes in our grade.”
The team and coaching staff also feel confident knowing that they have more skill and experience than anyone else playing. With almost all of the team being returning players this year.
“I’m expecting a big game from our quarterback, Avery Lay (‘24), I think she’ll have a big night,” Freeman said. “I think Christina Roberts (‘24) is the fastest player on our team, she’ll have a heck of a ball game. And I think Keygan Monahan (‘24), our center, is the focal point of our team, and without her, we wouldn’t be where we are.”
While the team has all the talent you could ask for, there is no substitute for hard work and they know this very well. The team continues to practice hard every opportunity they get in order to be the best team they can be.
“At practice, we will go into our offensive time, where we get our quarterback’s arms warmed up, and then we go into our offensive plays until we get those right, and then we go into our defensive time and get that sorted out,” Freeman said. “After all that work I know they’re ready to come back and get one last victory.”
