The Red, White, and Blue Dogs game, a new tradition for the varsity football team that aims to honor and raise funds for local service members and veterans, has special significance to juniors Luke Cavanaugh and Caden Steele. The event means a lot to both of them as they have very close family members who they will be honoring at the game.
Cavanaugh will be honoring his father, Master Sergeant Ryan Cavanaugh, who has served in the Army for 27 years including multiple deployments.
“I just think it’s pretty cool because the stories he tells about his experiences really make me respect him,” said Cavanaugh. “When I told him about [the game] you could tell he was actually surprised, and really happy, just because it’s never happened and he felt honored.”
Steele will be honoring his grandfather, Tom Steele, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who won a Purple Heart for his actions in combat.
“I know it really means a lot. My brother got to do it with one of his hockey jerseys, and that was a very emotional moment for my grandfather,” Steele said. “I feel like being able to do it again just really touches my heart.”
The red white and blue dogs game is a brand new thing never done before in Chelsea. It is also the first time The football team has worn alternate jerseys, because of this there have been many different reactions to the event.
“I think the team likes it a lot, It’s one of the cooler things that coach Dean brought to Chelsea.” Cavanaugh said. “I think it’s sweet. I think it’s very different for Chelsea. We’ve always rocked the blue and gold, but I think the fans are gonna like it too.” Steele said.
Although it is typical for the team to tell their honorees about the event so they know what to expect, Steele has something special in mind.
“Well, I haven’t told him about it yet. I think I’m going to wait till the game when he sees his name on the back,” Steele said. “After past experiences with the same thing [games honoring veterans] I think he’ll be very emotional and very proud.”
