Senior Kai Ziolkowski has been on the varsity team for his third year now, longer than anyone on the roster, and this is his last year to accomplish something special. Ziolkowski has never got to witness winning an SEC title before. Right now the Varsity team is 4-1-2 and currently first in SEC White.
”I played with three different teams now with different groups of players and this year, the varsity team stands a very strong chance at taking home the SEC White title,” Ziolkowski said.
Last year the boys varsity soccer team fell short of winning the league title, receiving second place in the SEC White due to Ypsilanti having a better goal differential. Ziolkowski described Ypsilanti as Chelsea’s biggest rival in the SEC.
”They have some strong and quick guys on that team, but I think we can beat them if we all work together as a team,” Ziolkowski said.
Even with all this success in the SEC games, suddenly the boys varsity soccer team hit a slump. The Bulldogs went two whole weeks without a win, tying two to Adrian and Ypsilanti while losing three rough matches against Jackson, Dexter and Milford.
”There’s a lot of work that we have to do going into the rest of the season,” Ziolkowski said. “I think we need to work on scoring some more goals.”
This slump resulted in players being unsatisfied with their team performances and it seemed they just needed something to give them a spark of confidence and positivity. That spark would be coming from Ziolkowski.
“Being able to stay that positive all the time is a great trait to have, and it takes a lot of determination and a good mindset, but he’s got all of it,” senior Alex Bennett said.
Ziolkowski is such a competitive and positive person on and off the field. You’ll never see him upset or have his head down no matter what happens, losing an important game, getting injured, whatever it may be he always has something positive to say.
“Anything you do or say to him, you just can’t get him down. It’s impossible,” senior Augustus Wehrly said.
