With captains of different grades and sports, there can be many similarities in their leadership qualities and types. Peyton Myers is a freshman and a captain of the freshman volleyball team. Kahlen Eckert is a senior and varsity field hockey team captain. Despite the age gap between these two captains, they both have very similar values and styles when it comes to being a captain for their teams.
“I think that a good quality to have as a captain is being there for your teammates, no matter what because sometimes you have to be a little selfless,” Eckert said.
As a captain, being there for your teammates at all times shows that you are selfless and not only there for yourself but for your teammates too. Not only did Eckert express this but Myers did as well.
“I’m always trying to keep a smile on my face and be there for everyone no matter what,” Myers said.
Both of the captains made it clear that the team was their number one priority and that they always try to be there for their teammates and keep the team together and positive.
“I think that team bonding has a huge impact on how we play, communicate, and work together,” Eckert said.
As a captain, Eckert believes that coming together with your team has a better outcome in games or in practice. Eckert believes that with the increase in team bonding that field hockey has been doing, there has been a better connection and a lot of improvement on the field. Both captains have similar views on team bonding.
“I think [team bonding] is one of the biggest things, because working together and team bonding is helpful if you don’t know someone as well, then you still have to be there and say ‘Hey, what’s your favorite color? What do you like to do? What’s your favorite position? What do you need to work on? What do you need? What do you think I need to help you with?’ It really helps us have a stronger connection and play better together and have better attitudes,” Myers said.
Myers and Eckert both believe that team bonding has a positive impact on both of their teams and helps their team with several concepts of both sports whether that’s in practice or in games team bonding has solved a lot of problems.
“One way that I push my teammates to do their best is at the start of every game, I like to cheer, and I like to hype everyone up,” Eckert said. “And I think that if you go into the game with high intensity and a good attitude, that the outcome is always going to be great no matter who you’re playing or you know what team you’re going against, but even if we’re starting off kind of rough and our game isn’t going that well, I try to keep a happy mindset and just a happy attitude towards the team so that we can all kind of come together and reset ourselves to keep up the high intensity.”
