The Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night of the year, with a set theme. The Met is full of world-renowned celebrities dressed to the nines in big extravagant dresses going all out. However, society is starting to question if celebrities are really following the theme with the outrageous choice of outfits–with a handful of the 263 celebrities who supposedly went off the theme of ‘The Reawakening of Sleeping Beauty: Garden of Time’.
While the Met Gala provides a platform for fashion experimentation, some celebrities chose to forgo the theme entirely, opting instead for outfits that prioritize personal expression over the coherence of the theme. Michelle Yeoh in a dress some say looks like tinfoil, Kylie Jenner in a basic tan dress, and Doja Cat in a white wet t-shirt dress. Many men just wore a basic plain suit including Alexander Skarsgard, Jack Harlow, Jude Law, and Michael Shannon whose suit was even torn up around the edges.
With people trying to take out the off-theme celebrities, they’re praising the celebrities who received the message and served on the carpet like Zendaya, who rocked a dark sparkly mesh dress, with shades of deep blue and aquamarine, Jennifer Lopez in a sparkly butterfly-inspired look, and Iris Law wearing another butterfly inspired translucent dress with sparkly pinks, blues, and purples.
Just like every big celebrity event, there’s drama roaming in the air. People are starting to bash celebrities who have not taken a stand on the situation going on with Israel and Palestine, saying the celebrities don’t care about anything besides all the big fancy events that they go to. Lots of people are even going as far as comparing our modern society to the Hunger Games world, a movie/book trilogy about a dystopian universe that is ‘similar’ to what’s happening now, rich people dressing up to go to big fancy events while others suffer. Of course, the drama every year is nothing new and will eventually blow over as time passes, but we all start to wonder, what will all the talk be about next year?
