The CHS Girls Tennis team won the regional championship in 2024. The girls tennis team has been awarded for at least 4 years in a row. How are they able to show their great ability and have a good season every year?
“The tennis regionals were good, every single flight, doubles, and singles won the region so that’s really good,” junior Hayley Hopkins said. “The tennis regionals went well for everyone on the team each way, so it was pretty successful,” senior Meghan Bareis said.
This season seemed pretty easy for them. How are they able to handle those matches?
“I just try not to think about it too much, I just try to stay calm,” Bareis said. “I know what I’m doing. My partner and I are pretty chilled. We talk about things that we have to do. Also our regional wasn’t super hard to win, so we don’t necessarily have to try too hard this time.”
Success comes at a price, they also had some challenging moments throughout this season.
“This is the first year I’m playing doubles, So I’ve always been a singles player. So that was a big change for me,” Hopkins said, “I would say the biggest challenge is just motivation, especially being a senior. All of the AP exams, sometimes I just want to be done. But knowing that it’s my last season ever with this team and the coaches I’ve known my whole life. It’s pushed me to continue what I love doing.”
Also, the varsity tennis team has a strong bond between them. Even though tennis is a single or double sport, the whole team encourages each other and shows sportsmanship.
“Me and Meghan encouraged each other, simply saying ‘You got this’ or if she makes a mistake or I make a mistake, we always say the ‘next point!’ And just leave behind,” Hopkins said, “Communicating comes really easily because we’re close friends. Sometimes we just have a little too much fun, but we know what to do, like lock in and get down to business. So I think we just communicate really well.” Bareis said.
