The “House of Atreus” is the last play that The Theatre Guild is putting on for the 2023-2024 school year. But with it being the last play for the seniors, some are making sure to go out with a bang and finish off the year with a play to remember.
“The show itself I like quite a bit,” Senior Avery Piatt said. “I always liked the look and atmosphere of Greek plays. I think they’re very fun and it’s very dramatized and it’s very fun for audiences to look at.”
Even though there are things to look forward to in this show it doesn’t hide the fact that there are problems on the rise. One such problem is the large number of seniors in the theater who will be leaving the program.
“One concern I have is there’s such a large group of seniors this year,” Piatt said. “I worry about how difficult it’ll be for us to rebuild that again the next year and how difficult it’ll be for the theater guild to recruit. And find new people that would be willing to take on such a heavy workload.”
As their time comes to an end in the theater, the seniors are excited to be in the spotlight one last time despite being ready to move on to their next chapter.
“I’m excited to perform,” Senior Marah Putnam said. “I’m excited to have it over, but I’m also really sad to see it go, you know? Because it’s like it’s my last show. It’s my last time performing with the guild. Maybe my last time performing at all.”
With this last chance to be in the spotlight, people are working hard to make this show the best that it can be with the actors’ performances and the lighting and design of the stage.
“My favorite part about the show is probably how into character some people get, they really are feeling the emotions of their characters and you can definitely see it on stage,” Putnam said. “Especially when Anna is in her character you get chills, I’m very excited because it’s very dramatic. There’s lots of dramatic lighting lots of dramatic like, monologues and lots of dramatic killing,”
In an attempt to make it a great show for the audience, the cast has a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it.
“I would say being in the cast is definitely a little more stressful because you have a lot of people trying, you’re trying to remember your lines,” Putnam said. “And you’re trying to remember you’re blocking you know, and especially for me because I’m one of three. I’m trying to keep it with the other two, like in sync, and then also trying to figure out what’s going on.”
While the cast does require a lot of work, the crew has to match and surpass the effort to make sure the show runs smoothly.
“That being said, with the crew, I feel like there’s a lot of brainpower going on there,” Putnam said. “Because I had to devise how to dye this giant piece of fabric and they’re out there like painting everything and building everything and it’s like, well, we haven’t done it on time. So really, I think the stress levels are about the same, but I still enjoy acting nonetheless.”
