Being a senior in high school, everyone wants to have a great year; it’s your last year with all of your friends and in your hometown before you go off to college. Everyone wants their story to have a happy ending, and that’s exactly what Cecilia Henriksen (‘24) got when her hockey team won the title of the Division 2 Girls High School Hockey Team State Champions.
“It was just a surreal feeling, especially being able to end my senior year like that,” Henriksen said.
On March 9th, the Girls Washtenaw Hockey Team became the very well-deserved Michigan Girls High School Hockey Team State Champions in Division 2, winning their game against Cranbrook Kingswood with a score of 5-1.
“Our whole team has been working so hard all year, to come together and pull it off, we peaked at the right point,” Henriksen said.
Individuals on the team also earned various all-state titles, Henriksen won first-team Division 2 all-state and the team’s goalie Trista Tracey got Division 2 honorable mention. Despite her success in the season, Henriksen doesn’t plan to continue her hockey journey throughout college but does intend to stay involved in different ways.
“I’m doing tournaments and stuff over the summer whenever I can, I think I’m also going to try and get into coaching too,” Henriksen said.
Despite not playing hockey this fall when she attends the University of Michigan, Henriksen is excited to explore new opportunities that may come her way, stepping outside of high school and learning to work in a new environment.
“I’m excited to have a break from everything that’s going on since I’ve been an athlete my whole life, just to step back and see what I can do other than that,” Henriksen said.
