Our CHS student-athletes are used to receiving support from fans, student sections, and especially the cheer team. What athletes might be surprised to know is that this year’s cheer team has accomplished all kinds of competitions and hardships. But throughout all of this, who exactly is cheering them on?
Madeline Collins, a senior at CHS, has been on the varsity cheer team all four years of high school and feels that the main supporters are adults in our community. They’re meant to encourage school spirit, so it is the kids in the school who are supposed to cheer them on in the way they cheer us on.
“We don’t have a big fan base,” Collins said. “You don’t really have students come just to come. I feel like recently we have had more supporters but mostly friends or significant others.”
The support from our cheerleaders has been around for us all year. On Saturday, the cheer team had an incredible performance and won the SEC for the first time. During this exciting event, no students from the school attended in support of the cheer team, but they did not dwell on the outcome of their performance.
“Winning the SEC was really important for us, it was the first time in CHS history that competitive cheer has won the SEC,” freshman Grace Webster said.
At this game the girls had their families to cheer them on through this competition, but the school’s students should have been there supporting them as they do for all of us. A positive for this team is that the other teams at their events all cheer on each other which brings even more support and love to these girls and their teams.
“On Saturday most of our families cheered us on which felt good. We do have a huge parent student section that comes to all of our competitions,” Collins said. “Also, at our competitions, we can always hear the other teams cheering us on too.”
