With many teachers getting ready to have a baby, CHS administration and staff have lots of work cut out for them. The long process of gathering interviews for who may be the best candidate for a long-term substitute is time consuming. Teachers and administrators have gathered interviews upon interviews trying to find the right teacher for the job. Trying to find people to fulfill the job gets stressful.
“It gets really stressful, ” Principal Doctor Nicholas Angel said. “You know, we have very high-quality teachers here who are consistent and know our structures and our routines. So anytime we bring somebody new, you know, there’s a certain level of tension there, but that’s also the strength because we’ve got a really good team of teachers that mentor that helps onboard that help ensure that people are successful.”
There is a long process that has to be taken to choose the right person for the job. The administration has to interview multiple candidates throughout the process to ensure they will connect with not only the teachers but all the students as well. The candidate has to do a trial run in person so they can get a feel of what needs to be done.
“We walk them through the same process that we do when we hire a teacher here,” Angel said. “So it’s hard to even get a subject here in Chelsea so we’ve found really qualified candidates.”
The process for teachers is just as stressful. They have to help administrators find the right person for the job. They have to take time out of their schedule to interview multiple candidates and see which ones are qualified to come back.
“But the way that kind of worked was that the administration sent out a posting looking for a long-term substitute,” history teacher Tyler Santoro said. “We interviewed four or five candidates in the first round and they brought back three for a teaching sample to spin see how they interact in an actual classroom and then from there we took it in there now the teaching sample them to kind of debrief with them afterward and we were able to settle on the candidate we’re pretty confident who will be able to do the job and get things done in our absence.”
Teachers are in on this long process as well. They have to balance work, getting ready for a baby, as well as finding the right candidate. That is a lot for one person to take on.
“It’s a lot, number one being gone for two weeks, also preparing sub plans and making sure everything’s good for the sub,” Santoro said. “And obviously, trying to teach in the middle of that is challenging, but it’s all for a good reason.”
