In a remarkable display of determination and skill, the Chelsea Girls Hockey Team has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, defying all odds and establishing their dominance in the sport. With a new passion for the game, this talented group of young female athletes has captivated the Chelsea hockey community with anticipation of what’s to come.
This new team started 4 years ago because of the mass amounts of girls in Washtenaw County who had previously played competitive level but there wasn’t a team. Schools from all around the country have a team but not Chelsea, we need change.
“The Ann Arbor schools have a girls’ team but other schools like Chelsea, Saline, and Dexter didn’t have an option but that’s about to change for us,” senior Cecilia Henrickson said.
We’ve known about this in the community lately and attention has been rising on this topic in Chelsea and the county as well. As more and more attention is given, more support will be granted for this new team which is vital to get the aid they need to thrive.
“The school administration supports us by recognizing players with varsity letters,” Henrickson said. “Parents are also a big support in hockey just like other sports but the energy is different. It’s been great to see upcoming younger players at games supporting our team”, Henrickson said.
This upcoming new female hockey organization is a big thing and can be seen as an overall impact on sports culture within itself. The opportunities for female athletes in our school, Chelsea, and just in all schools across the country to play the sport they love and to enjoy it in a communal environment along with other sports as well.
“Because we play it during the high school winter season, the team gives opportunities for multi-sport athletes to play hockey along with their other sports and activities. It’s another girls varsity sport which overall broadens opportunities for female athletes”, Henrickson said.
