When is it too early to set up your Christmas tree, blast some Michael Buble, and binge watch all three Home Alone movies? The topic of when you should start getting into the Christmas spirit is highly debated throughout CHS and social media. What do CHS students think?
There are mixed biases between students here at CHS. Most believe that you can get into the Christmas spirit before Thanksgiving.
“I think that once Halloween is over you can start decorating for Christmas because Thanksgiving is a smaller holiday than Christmas, and you can’t really decorate for Thanksgiving,” sophomore Matt Mattson said.
Given this year’s Halloween flurries, the argument to celebrate Christmas earlier may be reinforced by the frigid Michigan weather.
“When it gets cold out it puts me into the spirit; cold weather and snow is made for listening to Christmas music,” sophomore Kendra Smith said.
You don’t need the weather to be able to put you into the mood for Christmas. Festivities like Christmas related movies, activities and decor can put you into the mood for a cup of hot chocolate.
“Hallmark movies really get me into the Christmas spirit,” Mattson said.
But just because your favorite holiday is Christmas doesn’t mean you have to skip right past Thanksgiving and move right onto Christmas. Sophomore Max Collin’s favorite holiday is Christmas, but he believes that we should wait until after Thanksgiving to get into the Christmas festivities.
“Getting into the Christmas spirit before Thanksgiving is wrong because it is too early and you are already celebrating a different holiday,” Collins said.
The decision of when to begin celebrating the yuletide may be influenced by family traditions more so than our peers’ arguments, however convincing they may be.
“My family believes the same as me: we don’t usually put up decor and our tree until after thanksgiving,” Collins said.
