The Dig Pink volleyball game, a yearly matchup between Dexter and Chelsea, was particularly important to junior Maggie McKale. The event to raise awareness for breast cancer means a lot to McKale as her aunt continues her battle against breast cancer.
McKale is now in her second year of being a varsity volleyball player, as she was one of two sophomores on the team last year, so this year McKale is participating in her second dig pink event. The game is always one of the more important ones of the season, between the awareness of breast cancer support and the fact that it is against Chelsea’s rival, Dexter.
“Dig Pink is always one of those games that you look forward to as a team, wanting to beat Dexter,” McKale said. “It’s always a high-energy game and a great environment to play in between the big rivalry and the support for breast cancer awareness.”
A big part of this game is what the environment is always like. The gym’s student sections are packed, with everyone wearing their pink shirts. McKale loves the environment.
“It is always a great environment to play in; it is definitely our best student section of the year,” McKale said. “It is also great to see all of the people there for a great cause.”
This game means a lot to McKale because of the support for breast cancer awareness. But it has a deeper meaning for her as her aunt is still in her battle with breast cancer.
“I love being able to play the dig pink game because my aunt Beth was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and she is a survivor,” McKale said. “So playing in this game for her means a lot to myself and my family.”
