Despite still having one year left of high school, CHS seniors are hard at work preparing the necessary materials for a smooth graduation this spring. Recently, seniors have been attending various senior meetings, writing college essays, and completing college applications. Many due dates are coming up, such as senior photos on October 31st, cap and gown orders on November 15th, and diploma verifications.
“Right now, the only thing that has been on their plate so far is to get your senior photos in by the end of October,” senior class representative Vanessa Fisk said. “The diploma name verification already went out, so they got your exact name; how will it look on that?”
Shelley Weber, Chelsea High School counseling administrative assistant, began some of the tasks associated with graduation at the beginning of August. The counseling staff is in charge of organizing the seniors Naviance accounts and guiding them through conversations surrounding plans for after-high school and college applications.
“All counselors meet with every single senior; we get them into their Naviance account as all the college applications go through Naviance,” Webber said. “You’re working directly with your counselor, especially with common applications because that is a little bit of a heftier application process, as well as with letters of recommendation and all of that.” Webber said.
Although there are many things pressing for seniors in the fall, spring is where the majority of graduation preparation takes place.
“Major things will kick off in May,” Fisk said. “Senior class meetings with Dr. Angel and I where we will meet with you guys and kind of tell you how May is going to kind of look for you because you’ll start to have some prepping for class night and graduation, which are that weekend, May 31 and June 2.” Fisk said.
Many may be eager to finish their high school years, but final exams are still required during the last week of school, depending on the teacher’s class structure.
“But you also have senior exams during that last week before you have your last day of school,” Fisk said.
At the end of the year, seniors have many fun events to look forward to, such as the senior sunset/lock-in and class night on May 31st. Class night is where seniors get honored and share what their plans are for after high school. The final step of being a graduate happens on June 2nd, when the seniors will walk the stage and get handed their diploma.
