How old is too old to be tricked or treated? The topic of when it is appropriate to give up the night of fun in favor of a party or a night in is widely debated. Some give it up once they get to high school, and some even earlier. While some continue well into high school or even after, Is it weird to be an 18-year-old going out for candy? Is it weird to not go out for free candy? What do the CHS students think?
The common consensus among students is that being 18 or older is a little odd to be tricked or treated.
“There’s definitely a period where it gets awkward,” junior Jordan Nelson said.
Most agree that once you’re out of high school, you’re probably too old for trick-or-treating. But some say it depends on your intention.
“With the intention of candy being weird for 18 and older, dressing up is for everyone,” junior Lauren Thompson said.
Others say it depends on whether or not you’re going with younger kids. If you have a younger sibling or child with you, it makes sense that you’re just the supervisor. As if you aren’t the one going out for candy, because you’re not, it’s for the kid.
CHS students were also asked if they had trick-or-treating plans for Halloween. The majority of seniors don’t, although some are handing out candy or going with family. 80% of juniors asked are going. 60% of sophomores are going out this year; freshmen also have 60% of those asked if they’re going out for Halloween.
“It’s free candy!” Freshmen Emma Chase said.
