For senior Mitchell Brown, the excellence award has never been too big of a deal. You may have seen his face whether it’s when he’s leading the football student section with fellow senior Jenna Ouellette or around the hallways. Even though Mitchell has always been involved, he never expected it to be like this.
“They recently switched it from homecoming king and queen.” Brown says, “I don’t know when they did, but I didn’t really know about it until this year; this is my first year being nominated for the excellence award.”
You may think that walking out in front of his peers was very nerve-racking for Mitchell, but although he doesn’t view it that way because he’s “in front of people all the time”, he found it more difficult knowing that he was going up against other people.
Brown explains that it was really nerve-racking going up against other peers, but he wasn’t necessarily “nervous for people to watch me, but I was nervous knowing that I was going up against other people, and there was a large population of people there as if it were the homecoming game.”
Being a senior in high school is always a big deal, as it’s the year full of “last’s”like your last homecoming, Friday night lights, pep assemblies, ect. Not only is it your last year of high school, but it’s the last year before going out into the real world. Most seniors try to make the best of their senior year, and winning made Mitchell’s last year at CHS ten times better.
“I think it’s a little surreal,” Brown says. “Senior year, I’m really grateful for this opportunity; it’s a good way to start out the end of my last year in high school.”
Even though being a senior can be a little bittersweet, saying goodbye to your home away from home for the last four years is always good to go out with a bang.
