Being in high school can be stressful enough, but by taking on an extra role and joining cosmetology, you have more responsibility. It is more of a full-time job while still having a job after school. With taking on a bigger role, not only do you have lots of responsibility, but you also make lots of sacrifices.
Seniors Dani Wahl and Kyah Mitchell take on a bigger role than most students are used to. These students take on this challenging role that affects their day-to-day lives. Making them super exhausted when the day is over.
“You have to get up really early, and if you’re carpooling with someone, we meet here in the morning and then have to drive there and be there by 7:30 in the morning,” Mitchell said.
With having to get up at five in the morning every day, drive to CHS to carpool to cosmetology, drive back to CHS, and then drive to work and work long shifts, they use lots of gas money weekly.
With gas prices going up, they spend lots of money on it. “Expensive, really expensive,” Mitchell said. “Whenever I’m driving, I spend about $70 a week on gas,” Mitchell said. “Probably more honestly, it’s $60 to fill up my tank. At least $100 a week.” Wahl said.
Cosmetology is a long process. Start your junior year with the basics of worksheets to learn to do hair and nails. All while listening to the teacher talk about what your priorities are going to be for the next 2 years.
“It depends on the day; in your junior year, you’re doing bookwork,” Mitchell said. “So you are working with pen and paper and lecturing, and you’re learning about things, so it’s more work your junior year, and you don’t get mannequins until like three months or four months in.”
After your junior year of being in cosmetology, you make lots of sacrifices. You have to miss out on a lot of things. Whether it be school-related or half of your summer,
“Your summer between your junior and senior year, you are at cosmetology for several weeks, depending on if you’re behind in hours.” Mitchell said.
Most days, they don’t have much time for anything else besides cosmetology. They’ve missed out on big senior events, including the senior sunrise and some football games. But they now have keys to open more doors later in life, thanks to it.
