On Thursday, September 14th, during bulldog block, all freshmen voted for two new class representatives. But some might wonder why this is even necessary in the first place.
“I was actually going to run last year, and then the due date came”, newly elected freshman representative Emily Schaefer explained.
The entire process of elections felt very rushed, and many students didn’t have time to decide if they wanted to make such a big commitment. In the eighth grade, many people didn’t know what they wanted to do.
Freshman runner-up for student rep, Zoey Bendena, explained: “It just wasn’t a top interest of mine at the time.”
Others, like Bendena, were not focused on what they wanted to do in the upcoming school year. They didn’t have or were unsure of any plans for next year.
“Last year, they might have been a little too nervous to sign up, or they were just focused on summer break,” freshman class president Wyeth Angus said when asked about possible explanations.
Once reaching the end of the school year, students end up feeling burnt out and ready for summer. The timing of the election was simply not ideal. Unfortunately, the lack of interest led to a shortage of members on the student council.
The freshman student council advisor, Karen Kurcz, also expressed concern over the need for a re-election, stating that it was the first time in her experience that it’s been necessary. “What stopped the six people who wanted to run last year?” Kurcz said when asked about re-elections.
Luckily, there was much more interest this time. Last year, there were nine available roles on the council: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and four student representatives. But only seven out of the nine positions were filled from the previous election. This year, six people ran for an election; however, only two spots were available.
“The fact that there were a lot more people running made the experience much more challenging,” Schaefer said. Despite this hardship, Schaefer won the election, and Caden Basar was also happily elected into the position of freshman student representative. The student council happily welcomed them into their new positions.
“I am very happy with the results. I think that Emily and Caden will do a great job representing the class on the student council,” Angus said.
