All the way from the Lone Star State, Chelsea High School’s new choir teacher has big plans for the future of the program.
Kenneth Davis is a choir teacher from Northville, Texas. “I was a part of a band for a little bit when I was in middle school. I just ended up joining choir because [it was] something I was good at and liked doing in high school,” Davis said when asked about his spark for music teaching.
Davis also has a lot of experience, stating: “I was able to make the state honor choir for Michigan, and I went to this thing where it’s a bunch of rounds of auditions and it’s, you know, a certain cut-off the state requires that you’ve been at this big convention for all the music teachers in Michigan,” Davis said.
He noted that his competitive nature in Texas has helped his love for music grow. He also plans to help the CHS choir program grow and become more widely known.
“I had multiple student-athletes down south,” Davis said. “I had a lot of the football team that was in my men’s choir, which I thought was cool. I’m a big football guy; you just have to try to reach as many people as you can. It doesn’t have to be your main thing, but it can be a side thing. I think that’s what makes choir so cool—you don’t have to worry about an instrument or worry about anything else except for you and your voice.”
Even before he had gotten the job, Davis had already made an impression on the administrators in the building.
During the interview process, Davis made himself stand out early with Principal Dr. Nicholas Angel. “From the start, I had a feeling it would be him,” Angel said. “His energy and passion for music and teaching were well above the other candidates.”
This trait helped Davis beat out 24 other people for the job he loves to do. He intends to teach with passion and strengthen his students, as he is a wonderful addition to the successful and growing music department.
