With Halloween coming up soon, many have seen the shifts in the amount of participation between middle and high school. Along with the spooky spirit being low, students have felt that Halloween feels like a normal day and that Halloween is just more fun at the middle school. There was more teacher involvement and more fun activities instead of just schoolwork.
“On Halloween [at Beach Middle School] we would do fun coloring activities, or we would go in the pool, because Beach has a pool, and we would just have a fun day, and now there's no fun day, just all work,” Sophomore Elise Hugg said.
The teacher's involvement in the execution of their costumes seemed to be more planned and coordinated at the middle school, leading to a more festive and cohesive Halloween environment during school. While at the high schoo,l it seems less planned and put together.
“At the middle school, all the teachers dressed up in like, matching or corresponding costumes. And here, I feel like the teachers' costumes are not very good,” senior Olivia Boland said.
Amidst the teacher coordination being low, the student participation is not what it used to be. Having fewer people dress up can always seem less cheery, but if not all grades participate, it can be kind of dull.
“I feel like way more women dress up than men, which is sad and then I also feel like, out of all the grades, most of the seniors dress up, as opposed to the underclassmen, probably because the seniors don't care as much about their image. I definitely think that everyone should dress up more, though,” Boland said.
Throughout elementary and middle school, you would be given many opportunities to participate in the fun of Halloween. Some of the activities are like doing fun coloring sheets and costume competitions. While we might still have these in high school, there are just fewer people taking part in the activities
“there's definitely less spirit. You do a lot of less activities, and most kids don't trick-or-treat, which is a change,” Hugg said.
When you were little you would do more child-like activities like trick-or-treating with your friends but as you have gotten older the celebrations of Halloween have been less family-oriented and more with your friends.
“[There are] lots of parties, people hang out with their friends, but no one really trick-or-treats. I mean, some people do, but most people just go to parties,” Hugg said.
With the change from middle school to high school being a big switch, the way you celebrate holidays might change too. With less participation and teacher involvement, the celebration of Halloween at school has changed from joyous to gloomy.
“In middle school, I feel like [Halloween] was much more spirited. Where here I feel like it tends to be just another day of the week until you get out of school, but I think the high school is much less spirited,” Boland said.
