School has returned, leaves are starting to change color, and students are preparing for upcoming events. Before we know it, October 11 will be here, and Homecoming at Chelsea High School will kick off. The football game, dance, pep rallies, dates, suits, and dresses are already sparking conversation. From freshmen getting ready for their very first Homecoming, to seniors greeting Homecoming one last time, how can the same night affect students differently, and will their expectations be met?
Addison Leschuk, a freshman at CHS explains how she prefers smaller, quieter gatherings however, she is excited for the football game. She plans on going dress shopping.
“I don’t want to miss out on that experience, and it just seems fun because a lot of my friends will be going,” Leschuk said.
Sean Mahoney, another freshman at CHS, explains how he enjoys flashy parties. Although he is not a fan of big crowds, he is excited.
“Something that definitely stays in your memories for your whole high school career: being able to be with the people you care about,” Mahoney said.
Seniors and freshmen have varying opinions on whether or not to buy a new dress/suit. Addison and Sean believe that new attire for Homecoming is not a bad idea. However, McKenna Mahoney – Sean’s sister and a senior at CHS – has a different perspective.
“I’m actually planning on wearing a dress I’ve already worn before because I don’t feel like getting another dress,” M. Mahony said. “I want to save some of my money to get a better prom dress this year than a homecoming dress.”
Last Homecoming, many people got sick, and although that small factor will not keep upperclassmen from going again, the memory is still fresh for students.
“I sadly also got that sickness that was going around. I don’t really know what it was, but it seemed kind of like flu type symptoms, but it was pretty bad, and almost every single person that went to Homecoming got it,” M. Mahony said
There are many aspects of Homecoming that upperclassmen are looking forward to.
“I really enjoy going to the Homecoming football game with friends, because that’s always really fun…the dance is obviously a great time. Getting ready with friends is probably my favorite part,” M. Mahoney said.
A common trend arises as freshmen think about the specific events themselves, while Cash Anderson, a senior at CHS has different views.
“I feel like it's more of what you do before… the photos, the dinner, [and] getting your outfit. All that leading up to Homecoming,” Anderson said.
All things considered, Freshman at CHS have high hopes for Homecoming.
“I think Homecoming is gonna be pretty fun….it is a way to get out there and just dress up,” Mary Grfika (‘29) said.
