Chelsea High School’s women in history class provides a very safe and independent environment for young students who want to dive deeper into different perspectives of history. Word about the history curriculum shifting may impact the amount of people taking history electives such as this one. From the side of teaching and learning in this space, the experience of women in history class has been very positive for the few years that it has been provided.
“I definitely would recommend this class. Even like guys. We have a couple guys in our class,” freshman Sloane Steele said.
Students of the women in history class enjoy the creativeness that this elective program offers and how much they can use their experiences from the class in the real world. People not only enjoy the curriculum of the women in history course, but also find that having a teacher who truly cares about her students makes it an even greater opportunity.
“I just thought to myself, I would love to be able to explore this. It was so interesting to me, and I just wanted to share that knowledge with students,” Women in History teacher Laura Woodruff said.
Whether from a teaching or learning standpoint, women in history is something that is very intriguing to many at CHS. Mrs. Woodruff wants to not only share a good experience with learning about something not talked about enough, but also give a good environment for her students.
“I would say the work, it doesn’t really feel like work,” Steele said. “And also the class is very like, you feel very safe in it.”
Being in this class is described as more interesting and fun than most people would think. Many find the connections of women to major historical events important to know and understand appreciating women in several ways.
“I love history. Obviously, I’ve been drawn to women’s roles in it,” Woodruff said. “By giving the women’s perspective, it’s the whole story, but it’s another point of view or another perspective.”
A lot of times, the most important points of lessons can be missed and this kind of curriculum can cover everything about women’s impacts and their role in society from the time before us.
“I just like learning kind of about, like how life was back then, especially with women,” Steele said.
All events from the past have led us to where we are today. And more people should come to realize that women played a massive part in what our world has become. The women in history course is a huge way to become more educated on the past and how it carries into today’s society.
“I’ve really started to like history more,” Steele said.
