The Chelsea Bulldogs faced off in their annual battle with the Dexter Dreadnaughts Friday night at Jerry Niehaus field. Despite delays and changes related to COVID-19 precautions, the atmosphere and anticipation for the new season could be felt. The limited and mask-wearing crowd had a lot to cheer about, as the Bulldogs pounded the Dreadnaughts 35-12.

“The game against Dexter was definitely a fun one for me,” senior offensive lineman Brian Morgan said. “It was good to get back on the field since we almost had our season taken away from us. The whole team worked our tail off all week leading up to the big game, and it showed on the field with our dominant and physical performance. It felt good to put away Dexter for the 25th time straight and my last time.”

The Bulldogs stared the game strong with a 21-0 first-half lead. The combination of quarterback Griffen Murphy (’21) throwing to his wide receiver Joe Taylor (’21) and the powerful running of Cole Munson (’22) had the Dexter defense on their heels. The Dreadnaughts did not have a defender who could cover Taylor. Taylor’s transition to full-time wide receiver this season makes Bulldog offense exciting to watch.

Senior Dylan Dollinger also played well. He nailed 5 extra points with his powerful leg and had several deep kickoffs throughout the game.

Taylor also contributed to a strong defensive effort for the Bulldogs. Dexter’s rifle-armed quarterback, Collin Parchek made several good throws and avoided being sacked on multiple occasions.  In the end, Chelsea’s disciplined and physical approach wore down Dexter.

“This week we were trying to be as physical as possible because we know a team like Dexter, they’re just trying to throw the ball,” Taylor said after the game. “They’re not trying to run it down our throats. Their type of game isn’t to be physical, so we wanted to bring that to the game and make them uncomfortable.”

Fans should expect another good season from the Chelsea Bulldogs this year. The team has good balance on both sides of the ball along with strong team plays.

The Bulldogs travel to Ypsilanti Lincoln to play the Railsplitters this Friday. Even if you aren’t on list to go in person, you can still watch the game live at the Chelsea Athletics Youtube channel.
