Casting for the CHS One Act team was announced back in November, and a number of people are still elated regarding what a great cast it is! With eighteen ensemble members and ten principle actors, this year’s show of The Giver is sure to be a strong one.

The Giver, based on the book by the same by Lois Lowry, is a futuristic, dystopian story of twelve-year-old Jonas–played by junior Spencer Smith. In Jonas’ world, there is no weather, no colors, no emotions, and, most importantly, no choice. When he turns twelve, he is tasked as his city’s Receiver of Memories, a very important and secretive position, currently held by an old woman, played by senior and theatre veteran Annie Nichol. She introduces herself as The Giver, and shares with Jonas all the things that their society as banished. As Jonas learns more about his society and all that it lacks, he must choose whether safety is more important than freedom.

Director Paige Conway is sure to lead the guild to a successful season; however, there are more aspects to One Act than just the acting itself. There is a whole technical aspect that is completely student driven. Set, lights, sound, costumes, props, program design and t-shirt design are all aspects of the show that students head and execute to complete the show successfully and make it as great as possible.

Starting January 27, when the One Act team heads to their first competition, Districts, at Chesaning, everything–meaning everything: the way the cast and crew unloads their equipment and set, distributes it on the stage, performs the show and loads it all back up–will be judged. There will be at two public performances the first weekend in February in the CHS Auditorium. On Thursday, February 1 and Friday, February 2, at 7 p.m., the team will hold shows open to the Chelsea students and community. The following weekend, they’ll head to Regionals at Woodhaven, and during president’s weekend, the team will be hosting 28 schools in a two day State Finalist competition–where hopefully they will bring glory home to the Bulldogs.
