It’s that time of the year again: big dresses, cute couples, but most importantly, the homecoming game!

The homecoming football game is played annually on Chelsea’s home field the night before the homecoming dance. This is one of the most anticipated football games of the year; even kids who can’t tell the 50-yardline from the end zone will fill the student section to celebrate.

This year, the Bulldogs face the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats, and Chelsea’s team is feeling confident. Chelsea comes into the game a favorite, but the Bulldogs will still need the help of their fans as they attempt to protect their home turf on Homecoming night. The student section plans to dress in costumes to honor our “haunted house” homecoming theme (remember that no masks are allowed), but fans should be prepared to be even more afraid of how scary good these Bulldogs are. Students will also enjoy the crowning of the homecoming court during halftime.

Ahead of the game, I interviewed the head coach of the Bulldogs, Mr. Brad Bush, to get his thoughts. Coach Bush says that Chelsea needs a win either this weekend against Ypsilanti or next week against Huron to earn a spot in the playoffs. He also says his team still needs improvement heading into the postseason, but he makes it clear that homecoming isn’t just another night to practice. “The players love the big crowd and enthusiasm” that homecoming brings, according to Bush. So showing up and supporting the Bulldogs is the most important thing you can do.

To get a better understanding of what the homecoming game is like for players, I interviewed one of Chelsea’s stars. Senior Ronnie Buford highlights what the Chelsea football team does well. “We’re good on defense and we make big plays” he says. He also promises fans that his team will “fight for four quarters” regardless of the score. When asked what is different about homecoming as compared to any other game, Buford said the support the Bulldogs feel from the community is incredible: “We feel like we can’t let the whole community down.”

With fantastic players like Buford, it seems unlikely that this team will succumb to the pressure. This team needs the spirit of the Chelsea High School student body is behind them, so grab some friends and join us under the lights (and in costume) on Friday the 13th! Go ‘Dogs go!
